About Us - IIE Scholar Rescue Fund Skip to content About Us Around the world, scholars have long suffered harassment, detention, torture, and other forms of persecution as a result of their work. In the worst cases, scholars pay with their lives for their dedication to their academic work and freedom of thought. The Institute of International Education (IIE), an independent not-for-profit organization, has supported opportunities for persecuted scholars since its founding in 1919. In 2002, IIE launched the Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF) to formalize its commitment to protecting the lives, voices, and ideas of scholars around the globe. IIE-SRF is the only global program that arranges, funds, and supports fellowships for threatened and displaced scholars at partnering higher education institutions worldwide, including inside their home regions. IIE-SRF selects outstanding professors, researchers, and public intellectuals for fellowship support and arranges visiting academic positions with partnering institutions of higher learning and research. Our fellowships enable scholars to pursue their academic work in safety and to continue to share their knowledge with students, colleagues, and the community. If conditions in the scholars’ home countries improve, scholars may return after their fellowships to make meaningful contributions to their national academies and civil society. If safe return is not possible, scholars may use the fellowship period to identify longer-term opportun

Eligibility Criteria - IIE Scholar Rescue Fund Skip to content Applicants Eligibility Criteria IIE-SRF accepts applications from professors, researchers, and public intellectuals who face threats and cannot continue their work in their home countries. Scholars from any country and in any academic field or discipline may qualify. Applicants are assessed based on academic qualifications and experience, the quality and/or potential of their work, and the urgency of the threats that they face. Preference is given to scholars who: hold a Ph.D. or highest degree in their field and have significant teaching and/or research experience at a university, college, or other institution of higher learning; have an established record of published research; demonstrate superior academic accomplishment or promise; are facing or have recently fled from immediate, targeted threats to their lives and/or careers in their home countries or countries of residence; will benefit their home and/or host academic communities. Unfortunately, IIE-SRF typically cannot consider applications from individuals who: are seeking to continue their studies, including Ph.D. study, or to complete an academic training program; have been displaced or have resided outside their home countries for more than two years; hold citizenship or permanent residency in a safe second country; will have completed two years on a comparable fellowship or other program for threatened scholars. Because of high demand for assistance, I

Partner With Us - IIE Scholar Rescue Fund Skip to content Hosts & Partners “Hosting IIE-SRF scholars has been an extremely rewarding and unifying endeavor for Cornell University. They are talented researchers whose expertise and perspective adds to the vibrancy of our scholar community.” Dr. Jason Hecht, Cornell University The support and partnership of the international academic community is critical to the work of the IIE Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF). Our valued partners, comprising hundreds of institutions, individuals, and organizations across the globe, provide a crucial lifeline for threatened and displaced academics by identifying scholars in need of support, hosting these scholars on their campuses, and supporting their integration into new academic environments. HOW TO PARTNER WITH IIE-SRF Host a threatened scholar: Arrange a yearlong academic appointment for an IIE-SRF fellow. Provide matching support of equal or greater value to the IIE-SRF fellowship, generally in the form of salary or a stipend. (Contributions like housing, insurance, or professional development funding can also be considered.) Sponsor the fellow’s visa or work permit. Offer academic and professional resources, faculty mentoring, and staff assistance. Offer scholar support services: Contribute to the academic and professional development of IIE-SRF fellows and alumni as they integrate into new academic communities. Refer a threatened scholar: Nominate or refer to IIE-SRF academic colleagues faci

IIE-SRF and the war in Ukraine - IIE Scholar Rescue Fund Skip to content IIE-SRF and the war in Ukraine IIE-SRF and the war in Ukraine The invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces has had a devastating impact on the country’s citizens and higher education system. As the war surpassed the one-year mark, the United Nations estimates that as many as 13 million people – including many professors and researchers – had fled the country, while millions more are internally displaced. Many of Ukraine’s universities and research institutions have been damaged or destroyed, limiting the ability of scholars remaining in the country to safely continue their work. Like earlier crises in Iraq, Syria, Venezuela, and elsewhere, Ukraine’s higher education emergency underscores the need to protect the lives and work of Ukrainian professors and researchers. These scholars are integral to the country’s knowledge production and will help rebuild what has been lost. Since the conflict began, IIE-SRF has supported 32 Ukrainian scholars, many of them women, in academic fields ranging from children’s literature to medicine to fluid mechanics. IIE-SRF continues to follow closely the events in Ukraine and the devastating impacts of the war on the academic community and country more broadly. Within this context, we are faced with the difficult decision of how to best allocate our limited resources. After careful consideration, IIE-SRF is focused on supporting fellowships undertaken in Eastern or Central Eur

Travel Grant - Scholarships for Euro-Arab Dialogue Search Close Search Travel Grant The travel grant is designed for students and/or professionals seeking professional contact and experience in the Arab World or the Netherlands in the areas of education, science and culture. The objective of the grant is to promote mutual understanding between the Netherlands and the Arab World. Application requirements Since September, my journey has led me to the heart of Jordan, where I’ve been immersed in a training program focused on social work with migrants and refugees. Beyond the academic rigors, Jordan has offered me a wealth of cultural and natural wonders to explore. From the ancient marvels of Petra to the bustling souks of Amman, every corner of this country has something unique to offer. Besides delving into the complexities of humanitarian aid and its positioning in Jordan, I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself in Jordan’s rich cultural tapestry. From wandering the ancient city of Petra to navigating the vibrant streets of Amman’s souks, I’ve been enchanted by the sights, sounds, and flavors of this country. Even interactions with taxi drivers have become cultural lessons, with hand gestures simplifying the process of ordering a typical Jordanian coffee. – Eline Koopman, Travel scholar 2024 Read Our Alumni Stories Contact Correspondence Address: Lutfia Rabbani Foundation P.O.
