10 Tips for Writing Strong Scholarship Applications

What Makes a Scholarship Application Stand Out?

Having reviewed hundreds of scholarship applications, here are the 10 most impactful things you can do:

1. Start with Your "Why"

Open your personal statement with a specific moment or experience that drives your academic goals. Avoid generic openings like "I have always been interested in..."

2. Align with the Scholarship's Mission

Every scholarship has values — leadership, community impact, academic excellence, development goals. Mirror these in your application with specific examples.

3. Show Impact, Not Just Activity

Instead of listing activities, describe what changed because of your involvement. "Led a team of 15 volunteers" is weaker than "trained 15 volunteers who then taught 200 students."

4. Be Specific About Your Plan

Scholarship committees want to know you'll succeed. Detail your study plan, career goals, and how this scholarship specifically enables them.

5. Address Challenges Honestly

If you've overcome displacement, conflict, or financial hardship, describe how it shaped your resilience and goals. Don't over-dramatise, but don't hide it either.

6. Get Recommendations Early

Ask recommenders 6–8 weeks before the deadline. Provide them with your CV, personal statement draft, and the scholarship's criteria so they can write a targeted letter.

7. Proofread Multiple Times

Typos and grammar errors signal carelessness. Read aloud, use Grammarly, and have someone else review your application.

8. Follow Instructions Exactly

Word limits, document formats, and required materials — follow every instruction. Applications that don't comply are often disqualified immediately.

9. Apply to Multiple Programmes

Even strong candidates face rejection. Apply to at least 5 scholarships to maximise your chances. Use ScholarPal's match scores to prioritise your best fits.

10. Submit Early

Don't wait until the deadline. Technical issues happen, and early submission shows organisation. Aim to submit at least 3 days before the deadline.
