Why IELTS Isn't Always Required
Many universities and scholarship programmes now accept alternatives to IELTS, recognising that a single test doesn't capture English proficiency for all students. This is especially important for Palestinian and Syrian students who may face barriers to test centre access.
Common IELTS Alternatives
1. Duolingo English Test (DET)
The most popular alternative — taken online from home in 1 hour for ~$65. Accepted by 5,000+ institutions worldwide including many Chevening-eligible universities. Typical minimum: 110–120 (equivalent to IELTS 6.5–7.0).
2. Medium of Instruction (MOI) Waiver
If your previous degree was taught in English, many universities accept an MOI letter from your institution instead of a test score. This is free and straightforward.
3. Pre-Sessional English Courses
UK universities often offer 4–12 week pre-sessional courses for students who don't meet English requirements. Complete the course successfully and your offer becomes unconditional.
4. Interview-Based Assessment
Some programmes (especially Türkiye Burslari and Japanese MEXT) assess English through interviews rather than standardised tests.
5. TOEFL iBT / PTE Academic
While not IELTS-free, switching to TOEFL or PTE may be easier depending on test centre availability in your area.
